I am debating whether I wanted to stick with WordPress or switch to Squarespace for my website. I’m not new to WordPress, played around it since I can’t remember when. And I don’t have problems with code so I don’t mind tinkering the workings behind it.
Whatever this guy laid out, however, made sense to me.
Simplistically, WordPress is an open source platform, meaning that their codes are open to everybody to use and customize.
One of the biggest problems with allowing anyone to build plugins for WordPress is that the quality of the tools can either be great, or they can be terrible. In our observation, there are probably way more terrible plugins than great ones.
Which lead me into that experience I had one time when my site just suddenly went down, even my dashboard went down! When I checked the logs, it was a plugin update that messed up everything. I intended to debug the cause one by one but I figured it’s a waste of time so I just deleted the whole plugin from the file system. And the site was back up again.
Reason #1 there.
The site also pointed me to a theme shop, that boasts of all quality theme, plugins and support. It made me wonder, why should I be interested on buying quality themes when I can just do it myself?
Actually I know the answer: Time. I can do all these but I just couldn’t dedicate some time and commit to it. Which lead me into a new project (which I have really been thinking of doing since I started this thing): My customized theme.
And besides, if I’m going to buy or contract someone to do everything, where’s the thrill of it all… (at least for me)
